2010 Tax Relief / Job Creation Act: Changes to...
The “Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act” signed into law by President Obama last week which affected a number of tax code provisions.  I drafted this summary to provide a brief, non-tedious, and “legalese” free overview of some of the major changes affecting estate planning involving estate and gift taxes.  Please note there are nuances...

The (Slow) Adoption of Electronic Signatures
I recently came across an article on the Lawyerist discussing Adobe’s online application called eSignatures (currently in beta) which facilitates the signing of electronic documents over a web interface.  In other words, no human hand will touch the document for signing.  At first I was excited for Adobe’s product since it appeared to make the electronic signing of documents easier. ...

Twitter and LinkedIn for Blackberry
This is the week for new Blackberry applications. Twitter released its own software for Blackberry late last week.  Various tech media outlets are reporting that this may create some bad blood between Twitter and third-party developers.  Honestly, many of the third-party apps out there are deficient so software developed by Twitter is more than welcome.  Maybe this will cause those third-party...

ABA Techshow - Day 1
I’m in Chicago for the next three days for the ABA Techshow (nerd-fest for lawyers).  Looking forward to making some new connections, learning a few new tips and tricks, and maybe having some fun too.  So far so good.  I walked out of the hotel thinking I was going to be late and then realized Chicago is an hour behind Detroit.  So now I’m early and enjoying a coffee at Starbucks. ...

Riddle Doesn't Testify →
You have to appreciate the irony in a man refusing to testify and speak out at his own criminal trial, yet has been using Facebook and Twitter to express his innocence and criticize others.

Dreaming of a Detroit Metro Commuter Rail
When I moved to Southeast Michigan five years ago one of the first things I noticed was the lack of a viable public transportation system.  Mainly there was no rail system connecting Ann Arbor with Detroit.  After a while I began to understand that this was in large part due to the mindset of the region.  Everyone drives — it’s a God given right (this is the home of the auto industry...

About
About Richard Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, I now live in Southeast Michigan with my wife and son.  We made the move in 2004 so that I could attend law school and ultimately deciding to stick around Michigan and the Detroit Metro.  Although not as scenic as Pennsylvania with rolling hills and thick forests, Michigan certainly has its own charm including the Upper Peninsula and Mackinac...
